the show yesterday went really well. i showed up with my computer and sure enough, the guys with the turntables kinda gave me shit. see, i was asked to do this, and i made sure to ask that what i would be doing was ok. even though i was definitely NOT there to compete, i had seen it advertised as a dj competition. well i informed the guy running it that i would not be scratching and he kinda snubbed me off with a 'thats kinda the whole point'. i must have missed that memo. see i thought i a dj competition would be judged on what a dj does, mixing music and setting a vibe and getting the crowd going. not something as gimmicky as scratching some silly rhythmic noises over one record for a minute, stopping it cold turkey, and then doing the same thing, over a different song. WOW. isnt that exciting.
see my problem is that i have seen somebody scratch for REAL like kid koala and p-love, and that blows the roof off of any 'wikki wikki waaaah' ive ever seen some trendy kid in college do.
so anyway i started it out with a slow jam from funkstorung, just to set the groove up. mixed into some jungle and then some amen freakery courtesy of luke vibert aka amen andrews. headed to a much darker evil drumnbass area, then really got things goin with a triple take from kid606. that went over surprisingly well. there were people dancing and people shouting and i was having a great time. the kid606 progressed from some fast hardcore-dancey stuff to some weird fast 4/4 stuff, and then total jungle annihilation with 'my kitten'. by this time i had turned it up very loud and if you havent heard it, this song is speaker destruction at its finest.
aside from the fucking discrimination i endured for not playing traditionally and the fuckers trying to squeeze me offstage before i was through, i had a BLAST. and so did everyone else there. people were moving and that really is what matters. i am so thankful for those who came.
now the rest is me justifying myself and my attitude, so, you can stop reading here if you want.

FIRST OFF: fuck you if you think that mixing using a computer as a sound source is somehow 'below' vinyl. no you cant scratch (unless you have a final scratch or miss piggy system), but other than that and the lack of physical contact between you and the record, its the SAME THING. it is merely a sound source with adjustable speed and good cueing power.
SECOND OFF: the only way i know how to do it on a computer is because i learned on vinyl. vinyl is awesome. i love it. i love GOOD scratching. i hate carrying around assloads of records. in my computer i have thousands of albums and that is convenience and technology working for you. one of my favorite things to do is use the computer in conjunction with vinyl. its really fun to put em all together.
so thats my rambling.
i love what i do. i loved it yesterday. i dont care if its not as cool as an idiot with outdated equipment who happens to know the lingo. fuck lingo, fuck trends, open yer ears and yer mind will follow.

if anybody reads this im doing a very short set at the lbj amphitheatre (thats the student center) today at NOON. i was not going to participate in this 'beat bash' thing, but i was invited to do a little mix set so i said eh why not. i had a few hours to prepare and i never really practiced again last night...we'll see how that goes.
for those who need more incentive to check it out i'll be forgoing the usual dj fare of turntables and mixing with my computer. yes thats right im a dork. it will actually be a MIX though, using a hardware mixer and all, all i am changing is the sound source from vinyl to mp3s/wavs. also i want to turn some heads with just weird stuff you might not normally hear from boring ass dime-a-dozen djs.
jesus i have really started talking shit. oh well fuck it. i'll say it again i am not a BORING ASS DIME-A-DOZEN DJ. i'm not necessarily a GOOD dj either but at least its different damnit.
so anyway come out and support noggin. its a competition but again i dont really care about that. i wont be scratching any and since that is pretty much cool right now i wont be winning on any cool points. i reiterate...im a dork.
but it will be as loud as i can get it and it will be obnoxious at points.
